Andrew Brownell, piano (biography)

Andrew Brownell has been a multiple prizewinner in international competitions, including 2nd Prize and Benjamin Britten Prize at the 2006 Leeds International Pianoforte Competition and 1st Prize at the 2005 J.N. Hummel Competition in Bratislava. Mr. Brownell won 2nd Prize ex aequo at the 2002 International J.S. Bach Competition in Leipzig, the only American pianist to have ever won a prize in the history of the competition.

Andrew Brownell has played recitals and concerts across North America and Europe. His performances have been heard on BBC radio and television, NPR, CBC, Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, and Slovak Radio. He has been soloist with the Hall?, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Brighton Philharmonic, Slovak Philharmonic, Slovak State Chamber Orchestra, Mitteldeutscher Kammerorchester, Hermitage State Orchestra (Russia), and the Oregon Symphony. Mr. Brownell has collaborated with such conductors as Sir Mark Elder, Owain Arwel Hughes, Murray Sidlin, and Friedrich Haider.

Highlights for the current season include a return engagement at the Salle Cortot in Paris, a debut at King’s Place in London, and recitals throughout Britain and the United States.

A native of Portland, Oregon, Andrew Brownell began studying the piano at the age of four. His teachers have included Nellie Tholen of Portland, Oregon; Nancy Weems and Horacio Guti?rrez at the University of Houston; and John Perry at the University of Southern California (Los Angeles). Mr. Brownell is currently a fellow at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, where he is also completing doctoral work under the tutelage of Joan Havill.

An enthusiastic collaborative artist, Andrew Brownell was a member of a prize-winning trio at the 1996 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition (USA). Also an accomplished organist, Mr. Brownell was previously assistant organist at St. James’ Episcopal Church, Los Angeles, and he is an Associate of the Royal College of Organists.
